Zach Wilson struggles as Jets get crushed by Cowboys

ARLINGTON, Texas — Meet the new Jets offense, same as the old Jets offense.

In their first game without Aaron Rodgers, the 2023 Jets looked a whole lot like the 2022 Jets.

They struggled to move the ball, reached the end zone just once and leaned on a defense that battled but could not completely stop a potent Cowboys offense.

The end result was a 30-10 loss that was not even as close as that score indicates.

The Jets withstood an early barrage from the Cowboys and got to halftime only trailing by one score, 18-10, despite the Cowboys running 45 plays to the Jets’ 24 in the half.

But the Jets did nothing in the second half and the Cowboys pulled away to drop the Jets to 1-1 this season.

Dallas is 2-0 after beating both New York teams.

The Jets managed just one big play in the game, a 68-yard touchdown from Zach Wilson to Garrett Wilson.

The rest of the day featured Zach Wilson under a ton of pressure, much of it from Cowboys star Micah Parsons.

This was the Jets’ first week in life after Aaron, with Rodgers going down in Week 1 to a torn left Achilles tendon.

The Jets swore all week that the loss of Rodgers would not cripple the offense, but it clearly did.

Despite the Jets pumping up Wilson all week, he played a lot like the quarterback Jets fans saw in the middle of last season as the Jets tried to play around him.

Wilson was 12 of 27 for 170 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions.

The interceptions by Jayron Kearse, Malik Hooker and Trayvon Diggs all came in the fourth quarter and ended any hope of a miracle comeback.

Wilson mounted one nice drive at the end of the first half that resulted in a field goal, but the Jets went 1-for-10 on third down in the game.

The Cowboys opened the game with a 12-play, 75-yard drive that included three third-down conversions and a 25-yard pass to CeeDee Lamb.

Dak Prescott went 5-for-5 on the drive and finished it off with a 4-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jake Ferguson.

Prescott had his way with the Jets’ defense in the first half.

He completed his first 13 passes and went 21-for-26 for 165 yards with two touchdown passes in the half.

It did not take long for Parsons to make his presence felt.

He sacked Wilson on third down to end the Jets’ first possession.

Parsons was lined up over left tackle Duane Brown, but stunted inside and blasted Wilson.

The Cowboys got a 35-yard field goal from rookie Brandon Aubrey early in the second quarter to push their lead to 10-0.

The scoring drive began at the Cowboys’ 3-yard line and featured a 31-yard pass to Lamb where he fumbled at the end of the play, but it was somehow recovered by Cowboys center Tyler Biadasz instead of a Jets defender.

It was one of several missed opportunities for the Jets.

Their offense struggled to move the ball until offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett drew up a perfect call to get Garrett Wilson the ball.

Zach Wilson faked a handoff and then hit Garrett Wilson across the middle.

The second-year receiver went 68 yards for the touchdown and cut the lead to 10-7 with 7:12 left in the second quarter.

It was Wilson’s first catch of the game.

Sauce Gardner nearly gave the Jets the lead on Dallas’ next possession when he came close to intercepting a Prescott pass intended for Lamb along the sideline.

If Gardner caught it, he would have had a chance to return it for a touchdown with nothing but green AT&T Stadium turf in front of him.

Instead, he dropped it and the Cowboys continued their drive.

It looked like the Jets were going to stop the Cowboys when Prescott’s third-down pass to Lamb fell incomplete.

But John Franklin-Myers was penalized for roughing the passer after he hit Prescott low on a tough call.

That was not the only penalty that kept the Cowboys going though.

The Jets got them to third down again and Prescott’s pass to Jalen Tolbert sailed past him, but cornerback Brandin Echols was called for pass interference.

That gave the Cowboys the ball at the 1-yard line and Prescott found rookie tight end Luke Schoonmaker for the touchdown.

The Cowboys converted a 2-point conversion to push their lead to 18-7.

The Jets got the ball back with 1:52 left before halftime and Wilson mounted an impressive drive, using both his arm and his legs.

Wilson ran for 36 yards on scrambles.

He nearly hit Garrett Wilson for another touchdown but was hit by Dexter Lawrence as he threw the ball to an open Wilson in the end zone.

The Jets had to settle for a Austin Seibert field goal to go into halftime down 18-10.

The Cowboys moved the ball in the second half on the Jets but could not get to the end zone.

Dallas kicked four field goals to make it a 30-10 game.
