Beyoncé once again released her best album of all time with last year’s “Renaissance.” And while she set Grammy records, winning more lifetime trophies than any other artist, the Recording Academy still ignores her influence.
She won four trophies in the dance and R&B categories on Sunday, but lost out in the major races she most deserved to win. Despite a record 32 Grammys in total, Beyoncé has never won Album of the Year, a scandalous omission considering her incredible discography. Adele also felt the need to apologize at the 2017 Grammys when her album “25” beat out Beyoncé’s “Lemonade.” And it was especially disappointing given the impact of her latest album.
Beyoncé’s loss in the top three categories — album, record and song of the year — is disappointing but not so surprising in an industry where the exclusion of black artists seems inevitable.
“Renaissance” is an unconventional, genre-bending album that celebrates sadness and loss and the black and queer while honoring house and dancehall music, it’s trendsetting and defines today’s cultural moment in a way that no other album of the year can name. .

Harry Styles, who took home the album of the year trophy, said in his acceptance speech that “there is no such thing as the best.” Lizzo added for her record of the year: “You are clearly the artist of our lives.”
In some ways, the wide range of winners and nominees this year symbolizes the breadth of talent in the music industry, regardless of musical preference. But Sunday’s show’s overwhelming acclaim for a woman repeatedly referred to as “The Goat” and repeated hesitancy to bestow R&B, dance and rap awards reflects a frustrating pattern: Grammy voters have a big say in recognizing black artists. Makes an impact but fails to back it up.

It’s hard to categorize the 2023 Grammy Awards as a diversity win or fail. In an important moment for diverse artists, Kim Petras became the first openly transgender artist to win a Grammy, Dr. Dre has been honored with a Global Impact Award to his name, Lizzo championing joy and body positivity, and Bad Bunny and his outstanding performances include. Hip hop’s leading stars pay tribute to the genre on its 50th anniversary.
But Beyoncé has been seen as a barometer for the industry’s treatment of black artists, and her shutout in the major categories is an unwelcome reminder that many influential artists don’t get their due.
Beyoncé is up for a 2023 Album of the Year award for a culture-defining masterpiece. It’s a shame the industry still doesn’t recognize her properly.
