Ty Henricks looking to make impact at Rangers’ development camp

Ty Henricks didn’t initially hear his name when the Rangers selected him No. 183 overall in the sixth-round of the NHL draft last Thursday.

“Me and my dad were sitting down on the couch watching the draft, and he saw it before I did,” Henricks said Tuesday following Day 3 of Rangers development camp in Tarrytown.

“He jumped and he told me, ‘Ty you got drafted,’ and we both jumped and hugged each other. It was just such a great moment.”

While Henricks wasn’t in Nashville, for his introduction into the NHL, the moment his dream was realized was special nonetheless.

The 18-year-old left winger joined the rest of the Rangers’ 2023 draft class this week in New York and said he has felt himself grow at camp, specifically with his skating.

Henricks has been scouted as a pretty heavy skater, but you could see the youngster working on his edges, adding a little more jump and lightness to his stride.

At 6-foot-5 and 201 pounds, Henricks brings size and play-making ability to the Rangers’ prospect pool and said he has been working hard to reach his next level.

“I can push myself beyond to where I thought I could,” Henricks said. “Big power forward who can move the puck, get to places, shoot the puck and play a team game.”

Henricks spent this past season with both the Fargo Force and Muskegon Lumberjacks in the USHL, getting traded to Muskegon at the end of January.

Fargo is a veteran-heavy squad that had little opportunity for Henricks to eat real minutes in the lineup, whereas the Lumberjacks are in somewhat of a building mode, focussing on younger talent.

Henricks was able to take on a greater role in Muskegon, and plans to return next season before heading to Western Michigan University to start his college hockey career in 2024-25.

The California native tallied 19 points — nine goals and 10 assists — in 47 total games in the USHL last year.

Now in his first professional development camp, Henricks said he has learned a lot from the players around him.

“It’s awesome,” Henricks said. “Everyone here is such a good hockey player and going against them really just makes me better as a player and as a person.”

Henricks has found some chemistry with forward Nate Lewis this week who also plays the left wing.

“I would definitely say a guy I have been clicking with is Nathan Lewis, my roommate, great guy,” Henricks said. “I click with everybody, I like playing with everybody.”

The kid from California is carving out a space for himself in New York.

“It’s such a big honor,” Henricks said.
