I made this one work by the skin of my teeth, and Hard Mode was no help. My team and I solve in advance to bring you these Wordle Reviews, and I’m writing this one a few days after I solved the puzzle. To do so, I need to check over my old work — or reopen an old wound, if you will.

ADORE was the winning word on Dec. 4, 2022. GLASS was the word on May 19 of that year. Lately, I have been more cautious about searching the archive during my gameplay. For this review, clearly, I didn’t. Still, I am of the opinion that it’s sometimes fun to knock your Wordle out with the first few five-letter words that come to mind, without much attention and strategy. Taking the extra step of searching the archive often feels counter to the purpose of the game.

As I reflect on my experience playing today’s puzzle, I must declare that this Wordle receives one star for downright rancid vibes. It is the 700th, though, which may be redeeming, if only because it’s a round number and it provides me the opportunity to reflect on the number of games we’ve all played together. How many of the 700 Wordles have you played? Or it might be easier to count the other way: How many have you missed? Do you differentiate between words you failed to guess and days you forgot to play the game? Do you keep track of your wins and losses outside of The Times’s built-in statistics infrastructure? Today’s word is FLASK, a noun. According to Webster’s New World College Dictionary, it means “any small, bottle-shaped container with a narrow neck.” It’s often used in laboratories.
