A SWAT situation on the city’s North Side Tuesday was deemed “secure” by Illinois State Police as of 9:30 p.m. after suspects who fled from state police in a stolen vehicle in which AK-style rifles were found earlier Tuesday were said to be holed up in a condo building for several hours, police said.

Illinois State Police troopers located the vehicle reported stolen out of Chicago on I-94 Tuesday afternoon, but the suspects fled the area in the vehicle before troopers could initiate a stop, Master Sgt. Delila Garcia, a spokesperson with the state police, said.

The vehicle was tracked to the condo building on the 1100 block of North Wells Street around 3:45 p.m., Garcia said. Four suspects reportedly fled into the building. Troopers recovered the stolen vehicle and found two AK-style rifles inside.

As of 9:30 p.m., state police said the “situation is secure.”

Streets adjacent to the building had been blocked off as Chicago police SWAT and hostage negotiators were on the scene.

Police work the scene where Illinois State Police followed four people in a stolen vehicle as they ran into a high rise building on the 1100 block of North Wells Street on Jan. 10, 2023, in Chicago.
