Victor Wembanyama was all smiles when he got a call from Gregg Popovich after the Spurs took him first overall at Thursday’s NBA Draft at Barclays Center.

“What’s up, coach?” Wembanyama said with a smile as he was handed the phone in a short video posted by the Spurs.

The soon-to-be NBA superstar looked like he barely could contain himself during the conversation, showing off a little of his French before telling Popovich, “I can’t wait.”

“I’m ready to learn, man, I’m ready to learn,” Wembanyama later said.

It was no surprise that Wembanyama went No. 1 to San Antonio on Thursday night at Barclays Center after his burgeoning career in France.

The 7-foot-4 center was plenty hyped heading into the draft, as he became the 14th international player to be picked at No. 1 in the NBA Draft.

Wembanyama had played the last three seasons at the highest level of professional basketball in France for Metropolitans 92 of the LNB Pro A.

Last season, he led the league with 21.6 points per game, 10.4 rebounds per game and 3.0 rebounds per game.

Wembanyama also took home Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Chants of “Wemby, Wemby” echoed inside Barclays Center from Spurs fans that made the trek to Brooklyn to see Wembanyama’s initiation into the league.

Some have gone as far as to tout Wembanyama as the next LeBron James in the NBA.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski had gone as far as to call him “the most highly anticipated player to ever enter the NBA. … Maybe the greatest prospect in the history of team sports.”

But, the big man is not without doubters, as Barstool Sports’ Dave Portnoy said he isn’t certain that Wembanyama is a “sure thing.”

But Wembanyama can prove his critics wrong when he gets to play under Popovich, who turned his last No. 1 pick — Tim Duncan in 1997 — into a five-time NBA champion.
