No arrests have been made in the shooting deaths last weekend of two teenagers in Palatine whom police said Friday were “specifically targeted” in a gang-related incident.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the dead boys, both from Palatine, as Eduardo Alpizar, 16, of the 1900 block of Green Lane North, and Uriel Garcia, 16, of the 1200 block of East Long Valley.

According to police, shortly after 10 p.m. on Sept. 15, Palatine police officers responded to a call of a person shot in the 1800 block of Green Lane North. Upon arriving on the scene, two males – later identified as Alpizar and Garcia – were found by authorities in the 1800 and 1900 blocks of Green Lane North with life-threatening wounds, officials said.

Alpizar was pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiner’s office indicated he died of multiple gunshot wounds and ruled his death a homicide.

Garcia was transported from the scene to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge where he later died, according to authorities. The medical examiner said he died of a gunshot wound to his neck and ruled Garcia’s death a homicide.

“It appears the victims were specifically targeted as a result of a gang related incident. During the course of this investigation, the apparent suspect vehicle has been located and recovered,” Palatine police stated in a news release Friday afternoon.

Police stated in the release that no one is in custody related to this incident.

Authorities could not be immediately reached for further details.

Arlington Heights-based Township High School District 214 officials confirmed that Garcia was a “fun-loving” junior in the deaf and hard of hearing program at John Hersey High School.

“It comes with a heavy heart that I inform our parent community today of the passing of one of our students, Uriel Garcia Venegas,” Principal Heath McFaul wrote in a note to school families. “Uriel was a dedicated student, interested in automotives, and had plans of pursuing a career as a mechanic.  Staff describe him as enthusiastic, dedicated to his school work, and fun-loving.”

School officials stated in the notice that support resources would be made available to any Hersey students who needed it, in the wake of the fatal shooting. They emphasized there was no imminent threat to the school.

“It is devastating to report that Uriel’s death came as the result of gun violence over the weekend in Palatine, a senseless tragedy that will undoubtedly impact many within our school community,” McFaul stated in the note. “Our thoughts and condolences as an entire Hersey community go out to Uriel’s family and friends and they process this tragic event.”

It was not immediately clear what school district Alpizar was part of.

The death of these 16-year-old boys followed the shooting death of another 15-year-old last month.

Damian Hernandez, 15, of the 900 block of Foxwood Drive, in Mount Prospect, was shot Aug. 17. That shooting took place in the 1700 block of Clear Creek Bay, in Palatine, and police said it was also gang-related.

Hernandez was taken to the hospital immediately following the shooting, but died five days later. A 14-year-old boy is charged with the shooting death and an 18-year-old teen had also been sought, police previously stated.

SD214 officials confirmed Hernandez was a sophomore who had just transferred into the six-school district as of this academic year, but declined to say which specific school he attended. His funeral had been scheduled for Sept. 8.

In its release Friday, Palatine Police Department officials stated the department continues to investigate the shootings of the two 16-year-olds with the assistance of the Major Case Assistance Team, federal law enforcement partners and the Cook County sheriff’s office. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Palatine Police Department at (847) 359-9000.
