Second ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel Based on Dunk and Egg Stories Picked Up by HBO

Variety reports that HBO is officially moving forward with its second Game of Thrones prequel. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is based on George R.R. Martin‘s Dunk and Egg series, a series of novellas and short stories set nearly a century before the events of A Game of Thrones. The show is one of many long-gestating Game of Thrones spin-offs that HBO has been developing, but will be the second after House of the Dragon to actually make it to the screen.

The Dunk and Egg series is a fan favorite amongst A Song of Ice and Fire fans as it follows a chivalrous young hero and his squire through various tourneys, feasts, and adventures. Ser Duncan the Tall doesn’t come from a noble house, per se (though there are fan theories he might be related to the Strongs we met in House of the Dragon). Egg is the nickname for one Aegon Targaryen, a younger son of the current king with little expectation of inheriting the crown.

The official description of the series is as follows: “A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

The announcement was made during today’s Warner Bros. Discovery presentation, along with the news that HBO Max will be rebranded simply as “MAX.” The new iteration of the streaming service will have three price ranges for consumers, ranging from $9.99 per month for MAX with ads, $15.99 per month for Ad-free, and $19.99 per month for Ultimate Ad-free (which will allow up to four streams on one account and 4K options). MAX will launch on May 23.

No word yet on casting for the new Game of Thrones series or who will be showrunning. House of the Dragon Season 2 went into production yesterday and a new season of the series is expected in 2024.
