Rogers Park bar vandalized by man who yelled homophobic slurs: police

A man yelling homophobic slurs used a hammer to break a window of a Rogers Park bar Monday afternoon, according to police.

At approximately 5:40 p.m., a man approached a man and a woman as they exited their vehicle and began yelling homophobic slurs and threatening them. He then walked away, police said.

The man and woman proceeded to enter R Public House, a bar located at 1508 W. Jarvis Ave. The offender then returned with a hammer and smashed one of the bar’s windows.

Carlos Treviño stopped by Tuesday afternoon to check in on the bar after the attack. The previous day, he had been working and having a bite for dinner at R Public House when he said he heard some commotion at the front door as a small group gathered.

“And not even a minute after they came in, I heard this voice — this guy came to the door, opened it, just stood there. And he was taunting them,” Treviño said. “He slams the door shut, and then takes this huge hammer — it looked to me like it was a big wrench, almost. He just started smashing the door with it. Immediately, everyone just flew.”

No one was injured, according to police, and no arrests had been made as of Tuesday morning.

“Nothing like a homophobic guy with a hammer yelling anti-gay slurs at customers and threatening them to shake up the night,” tweeted the account for R Public House on Monday night.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the door had been repaired but some fragments of glass remained on the floor. Trevino called the bar an “institution” and very “welcoming” of LGBTQ clientele. “So to have that hatred being shouted into the door was something we don’t get a lot of, so it was kind of surprising,” he said.

“We were left putting together what had happened, picking up the pieces — it was a little bit of terror here in Rogers Park,” Treviño said. “I’m really concerned because I think the problem of mental health has not really been addressed here in this city, for quite a while … We have, in this area, a lot of people in need and not a lot of attention.”
