Rangers can still earn home ice for first round of playoffs

The Hurricanes and Devils, the only teams ahead of the Rangers in the Metropolitan Division standings, lost on Saturday, when the Blueshirts shut out the Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena.

That kept each club stagnant in terms of playoff seeding, with Carolina remaining atop the division with 109 points, New Jersey at No. 2 trailing by a single point and the Rangers sitting at 106 points in third.

The Devils had a prime opportunity to surpass the Canes with a win over the NHL-leading Bruins, who squashed that hope with a 2-1 victory in Boston, which tied the NHL’s single-season record of 62.

Earlier in the day, Carolina lost its second game in a row, a 4-3 defeat to the Sabres.

While the Hurricanes have a game in hand on both the Rangers and Devils, there is a scenario in which the Rangers could still snag home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

If the Rangers win their last two games, against the Sabres on Monday and the Maple Leafs on Thursday, and the Devils lose out against Buffalo and Washington, the teams would swap places in the standings.

If the clubs somehow end up tied, the first tiebreaker of regulation wins could swing in the Rangers’ favor.

If the Rangers win their last two games in regulation and the Devils don’t win once in regulation, the Rangers would have 39 such wins and the Devils would finish with 38.

The Rangers, who have had their sights set on the postseason for some time, are naturally getting antsy to finish out the regular season.

“There’s definitely another level that we’re going to get to, come next week,’’ Barclay Goodrow said after Saturday’s win. “We kind of knew where we’re going to finish for a while now, so I think it’s exciting to play these last two games and get into the playoffs. I think we’re all looking forward to that.’’

Based on the season series alone, the Rangers probably have a more favorable matchup in the Hurricanes.

They went 3-1-0 against Carolina this season, which only reaffirmed their seven-game series win in the second round of last year’s playoffs.

The Rangers may have the edge in goal over both the Devils and Hurricanes, but Carolina is a club they’ve proven themselves against.

Their playoff history and the way the regular season unfolded should have the Rangers feeling confident in a matchup with the Canes.

Nevertheless, there’s a strong chance the current standings stick and the Rangers meet the Devils in Round 1.

It would be the Battle of the Hudson between rivals who are both looking to establish dominance over the other.

The Rangers went 1-2-1 against the Devils this season, over which they were outscored 15-10.

The last time these teams met was at the end of March, when the Rangers endured a deflating 2-1 loss with second place in the division on the line.

On paper, the Rangers appear to have the edge over the Devils in critical categories like goaltending and experience.

With this Devils team, however, anything appears to be possible.
