Mitchell, Ind. — Mitchell, Ind. (AP) – Two southern Indiana law enforcement officers were wounded by a man who fatally shot himself Sunday during an exchange of gunfire, police said.

Anthony Richmond, 29, of West Baden Springs, Indiana, was pronounced dead early Sunday in the Lawrence County town of Mitchell, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) southwest of Indianapolis, Indiana State Police said.

The agency said Richmond fled on foot from officers as they tried to handcuff him after police found drugs in his car, which police had stopped for a traffic violation.

When officers caught up to Richmond, he resisted arrest before pulling out a handgun and firing at officers “at point blank-range,” state police said in a news release Sunday.

In a later update identifying Richmond and the officers, the agency said preliminary findings showed Richmond “fired multiple shots at the officers while physically restraining them.”

Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputy Joshua Rhodes and Mitchell Police Officer Christian Anderson were injured in that shooting, but at least one of them returned fire, fatally wounding Richmond, state police said.

Rhodes suffered two gunshot wounds and was released from an Indianapolis hospital Sunday, while Anderson was hospitalized Sunday in stable condition with a single gunshot wound.

An update on Anderson was not immediately available Monday morning. But Lawrence County Sheriff Greg Day said in a statement that both officers “will make a full recovery.” He said Sunday’s shooting highlights the dangers officers face every day.

“I remember a family grieving the loss of a loved one. The senseless criminal act affected the lives of many people,” he added.

Indiana State Police are investigating the shooting, which was captured on the officers’ body cameras. The agency said its investigators are reviewing that footage.
