A report of individuals carrying firearms on the Valparaiso University campus near Beacon Hall late Wednesday that prompted an order for students to shelter in place was unfounded, according to the Valparaiso University and city of Valparaiso police departments.

Valparaiso police responded at 11:37 p.m. to assist university police, in conjunction with the Porter County Sheriff’s Department, to reports of subjects walking on campus near the building with firearms.

An order to shelter in place was issued to the campus community at 12:10 a.m. on Thursday through the RAVE Mobile Safety text messaging system. All three law enforcement agencies conducted a thorough investigation of the building and the surrounding area.

The investigation indicated that no credible threat existed and there was no danger to the campus or community. Police remained in the area overnight, and asked that any suspicious behavior should be reported to authorities immediately.
