A shocking clip shows law enforcement handcuffing a NewsNation representative while reporting from a press conference attended by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) on Wednesday.

Evan Lambert, a News Nation reporter based in Washington, DC, was arrested in East Palestine, Ohio, while covering a railroad derailment near the Pennsylvania state line.

Lambert, who shot live from an Ohio Emergency Management Agency news conference, was eventually “pushed to the ground, cuffed and told to remain quiet as DeWine spoke before arresting him,” according to the subscription television network, previously known. As WGN America.

DeWine said Wednesday that an arrest is not something law enforcement has authorized.

“My practice has always been that if I’m doing a press conference, if somebody wants to report from there and they want to talk to people back on the channel, whatever happens, they have every right to do that,” DeWine said. “If someone is prevented from doing so or told they cannot do so, then they are wrong. It was nothing I authorized.”

Lambert, putting him in the squad car, said, “It’s hard to do your job in America in 2023, but we’ll keep doing it.”

Lambert was charged with criminal trespass and disorderly conduct, according to a statement from NewNation’s Washington Bureau Chief Mike Vickera. He was finally released from jail late on Wednesday.

Vikera, who said Lambert was safe and sound, told reporters at a press conference that he was doing his job.

“As you can see from the videos, he was doing his job – what hundreds of journalists do without incident – reporting to the public on an issue of urgent, critical interest to our audience,” Vickera said.

DeWine’s office said in a statement to NewsNation that the governor “has always respected the right of the media to report directly.”

“Since the governor did not witness what happened after the broadcast ended, we cannot comment on what led to the journalist’s arrest.”
