A Naperville police officer arrested on charges he illegally checked someone’s license plate number to obtain personal information has been placed on administrative leave, Police Chief Jason Arres said.

Anthony Cimilluca, 48, was arrested on a class 3 felony charge of official misconduct after turning himself in to authorities Thursday night, the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office said.

An arrest warrant had been issued Tuesday by DuPage County Judge Brian Telander. Cimilluca was released on a $10,000 recognizance bond.

Arres, in a statement issued Friday morning, said the department is aware of the charge and cooperating with prosecutors. Additionally, an internal investigation is being conducted.

Cimilluca will remain on administrative leave until the conclusion of that probe, which is separate from the criminal investigation, Arres said.

“We intend to fully investigate the charges and pursue appropriate actions while providing due process required under state law,” he said. “This charge is not at all representative of the great work the men and women of the Naperville Police Department do on a daily basis.”

Neither Arres or Cmdr. Michaus Williams, who provided Arres’ public statement, responded to questions about how the alleged offense was discovered, who Cimilluca was allegedly checking when he used the Law Enforcement Agencies Data System or what kind of disciplinary record Cimilluca had prior to his arrest.

The offense occurred on Feb. 14, according to the state’s attorney’s office.

“While the allegations against Mr. Cimilluca are very serious, I would like to stress that these allegations are in no way indicative of the outstanding work of the men and women in the Naperville Police Department,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in announcing the arrest and charges.

Cimilluca’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 24.
