A grandfather thwarted a would-be carjacker Friday when the suspect attempted to steal the man’s car while his grandson was inside, officials said.

The suspect, Anton Cross, 24, of Mundelein — out on parole for second-degree murder — was arrested about 40 minutes later when police were notified about a suspicious man hiding in bushes about a mile and a half from the scene, a news release from the DuPage County state’s attorney and the Naperville police chief said.

The incident occurred about 12:15 p.m. in the 1300 block of McDowell Road when the victim was approached by a man, later identified as Cross, who asked for directions as the man was putting his grandson into his vehicle, the report said.

After the victim provided the directions, Cross allegedly pulled out a gun and told the victim to “give me your f*****g keys.” The man refused, and the suspect fled, according to the report.

Less than an hour later, Naperville police received a 911 call from someone wanting to report a suspicious man hiding in the bushes on Hinterlong Lane. Officers responding to the call saw Cross drop a loaded Glock handgun as he ran from the scene and were able to take him into custody, the report said.

Cross has been charged with one count each of attempted aggravated vehicular hijacking, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon, all of which are felonies.

“The allegations that in the middle of the afternoon, Mr. Cross, who is currently on parole for second-degree murder, threatened to steal at gunpoint a man’s car while his grandson was inside the vehicle, are outrageous and will be met with the full force and effect of the law,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in the release.  

Cross’ parole was set to expire Jan. 30, 2024. No details on that case or where it occurred were released.

Cross is currently being held in the DuPage County jail in lieu of $200,000 bail set Saturday by DuPage County Judge James McClusky.
