Jimmy Garoppolo’s Raiders physical checks off key step in contract drama

Put any Jimmy Garoppolo questions on hold for now.

The Raiders’ starting quarterback passed his training camp physical, ESPN reported on Sunday, putting an end to speculation that Las Vegas could opt out of Garoppolo’s contract if his rehab from offseason foot surgery — which occurred after he signed with the team — didn’t go smoothly.

The Raiders signed Garoppolo to a three-year, $72.75 million contract in March with an addendum written into the deal that if he didn’t “pass the Club’s physical examination,” the team could get out of the deal.

There is reportedly a scenario where the Raiders could get out of their contract with Garoppolo at any point without owing money due to foot concerns.

However, Pro Football Talk reported that the addendum in the contract goes away as long as Garoppolo plays a regular season game, passes his physical and doesn’t reinjure his left foot.

With a significant step toward eliminating that clause complete, Las Vegas goes into 2023 — coming off a disappointing 6-11 record — with a clearer understanding of its quarterback position.

Derek Carr was released by the team following an end to the 2022 campaign where he was benched for Jarrett Stidham, and that resulted in the Raiders bringing in the former 49ers signal-caller to work with head coach Josh McDaniels — who overlapped with Garoppolo in New England as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator.

Garoppolo injured his foot on Dec. 4, but before that, he’d been productive while filling in for Trey Lance.

The 49ers were 8-3 in games that Garoppolo appeared in last season, throwing for 2,437 yards 16 touchdowns and 4 interceptions.

The Raiders opens the season on Sept. 10 in Denver against the Broncos.
