Jennie Ruby Jane Is The Real Star of ‘The Idol’

Controversial opinion, but I think HBO‘s The Idol is a halfway decent show. While I’m not qutie as enamored with it as Decider’s resident Idol-loving recapper Sean T. Collins, I can appreciate that the show is a much more of a horror story than an erotic spectacle. Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye‘s Tedros Tedros is meant to be a skeevy dork whose machinations can be seen from a mile away. Lily-Rose Depp‘s Jocelyn is specifically designed to be an exploited pop tart in way over her head. The Idol is constantly turning the screws on Joss, setting her up for an inevitable breakdown before she can breakthrough.

So far my biggest quibble with The Idol hasn’t been the un-sexy sex scenes or The Weeknd’s wooden Dracula drag. I simply wish there was more Jennie Ruby Jane, aka Dyanne, the dancer who is plotting to steal Jocelyn’s spotlight right from underneath her. I think The Idol could use a little bit more of the world-famous IRL pop star and I’m hoping to see more of the Blackpink singer in tonight’s all-new episode.

While I wouldn’t dare call myself a blink — I am not nearly as dedicated as those wonderful fans — I do enjoy myself a bit of Blackpink. I’ve definitely watched YouTube videos of the K-pop group’s first Coachella performance multiple times. Their first album saved me from depression during the pandemic and I think “Whistle” is one of the most audacious opening singles from a pop act of all time. I like Blackpink hence I like Jennie Ruby Jane.

More importantly, I like what Jennie Ruby Jane’s Dyanne represents in the world of The Idol. One of the most interesting things about the show is how Sam Levinson and The Weeknd have surrounded Jocelyn with a cast of people who are real life pop stars. It’s a meta move that jacks up the pressure on Jocelyn to prove that she really has the talent, charisma, and drive to be a pop diva.

In Dyanne’s specific case, Jocelyn is constantly compared to the talented dancer and Jocelyn is found lacking. In last week’s episode, Nikki (Jane Adams) even goes so far as to set up Dyanne as a Plan B for Jocelyn’s upcoming single. Dyanne is told to sing “World Class Sinner/I’m a Freak” in a nearby studio as Jocelyn’s music video shoot melts down. All this seemingly comes as easy to Dyanne as the demands of the role are for Jennie Ruby Jane. In one of HBO’s behind-the-scenes packages, Jennie reveals that she wasn’t given a lot of time to learn the complex choreography for the show, but it wasn’t a big deal. You know, because she’s used to it. She’s the real fucking deal.

Maybe it’s the All About Eve fan in me, but I find the story of a fading star being taken down by a woman she assumes is happy to be in her shadow to be one of the most compelling showbiz tales. In the snippets The Idol has given us of Dyanne, Jennie Ruby Jane has shown she has it in her to be the Gen Z Eve Harrington. More than that, she’s shown us what a pop star looks like. It’s not exactly Jocelyn, but it is Jennie Ruby Jane.

You could almost say — and I’ll say it — Jennie is the real star of HBO’s The Idol. And I hope there’s more of her conniving, charismatic ways in The Idol Episode 3 tonight.
