Jakeem Grant potentially out for season in latest setback

Jakeem Grant just can’t seem to stay on the field.

During the opening kickoff in the Browns’ game against the Chiefs on Saturday, the Cleveland wide receiver and return man was carted off the field, suffering what the team fears was a broken patella, Cleveland.com reported.

A broken patella would sideline Grant for the entirety of the 2023 season, just one year after Grant suffered an Achilles tear that took him out for all of last year.

Grant is set to undergo an MRI exam on Sunday.

The 5-foot-7, 171-pound special teams specialist signed a three-year, $10 million deal with the Browns in March 2022, but hasn’t played a regular-season snap for the team since that point.

Grant’s former Texas Tech teammate Patrick Mahomes embraced Grant in the cart as he went to the locker room.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski said wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones could return punts and running back Jerome Ford could take over kick-return duties in the meantime.

Grant, who was picked in the sixth round of the 2016 draft by the Dolphins, has seen a fruitful career as a return specialist that included a Pro Bowl selection in 2021.

He has four career punt returns for touchdowns and two kickoff returns in which he ran for six.

On the receiving front, Grant has 100 career receptions for 1,140 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Texas Tech product was part of a 2021 trade in which he was sent to the Chicago Bears and the Dolphins received a 2023 sixth-round pick, which Miami used to select Elijah Higgins.

The Browns, who went 7-10 last season and finished fourth in the AFC North, are counting on quarterback Deshaun Watson to bounce back and help the team reach the playoffs.

Watson, who was suspended 11 games and accused by more than two dozen massage therapists of sexual misconduct, signed a five-year, $230 million deal in March 2022, the largest guaranteed amount in NFL history.
