It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is no stranger to setting records. Recently, the show became television’s longest-running live-action sitcom after its 15th season premiered, surpassing even Seinfeld.

The Gang is just two years away from celebrating its 20th anniversary, but is now making headlines for a totally different reason. According to The Wrap, a new study has found that FX’s crass barroom comedy has more words per minute than any other show on TV.

The WordFinderX study began as a broader study of subtitles and they’re accessibility to those with disabilities. The National Disability Authority recommends that English language subtitles not exceed 170 words per minute, though they prefer shows aim for 140 wpm.

The site analyzed subtitles from the most popular TV shows on subtitle downloading services and broke down the WPM, discovering that comedy was the wordiest genre they studied. The genre as a whole averaged 133.6 wpm, which is still well below the authority’s recommended maximum output.

Not one popular sci-fi/fantasy show that was studied exceeded 100 wpm, while the wordiest superhero show was DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

It’s no secret that comedy relies heavily on language so it’s not surprising that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia broke the record for maximum recommended wordage with a whopping 176.2 wpm.

If you’re a fan of the show, you know that the gang sure does love to talk. As the study points out, the network even once pitched it as “like Seinfeld on crack.” It has 5 core cast members and more than one recurring antagonist, including The Waitress, Maureen and Bill Ponderosa, the McPoyle brothers and “Rickety Cricket.”

It’s important to note that one flaw in the study is that subtitles are often condensed/simplified and are not straight transcripts of dialogue. This means that the word count for Always Sunny is likely even higher.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been renewed through 2026 and is currently filming its 16th season.
