We are almost halfway through the 2023 MLB season, which puts us at a important point in fantasy baseball

If you haven’t evaluated your team to identify your statistical strengths and weaknesses by now, you need to step up your game and figure it out if you want to win.

Most players have had ample time to show you what they’re all about this year, so setting up trade or waiver-wire targets becomes more about who can help you in which categories than anything else.

At a time when MLB is posting record numbers in stolen bases, it seems as if many are faltering in home runs and RBIs.

But acquiring someone like Matt Olson or Pete Alonso will cost you more than just an arm and a leg, so if you don’t have a genuine surplus somewhere, you need to find realistic targets who come at a relatively bargain price.

We all know how difficult it can be to trade, so your first stop should always be your league’s waiver wire. Start sifting through team depth charts and you’ll find there likely still will be a number of power bats available.

Ownership percentages for Jorge Soler on both Yahoo and ESPN are still surprisingly low, so if people are passing on him, he is a must-add.

His batting average isn’t great and the Marlins don’t exactly offer up much in the way of lineup protection, but his 20 home runs and 40 RBIs speak for themselves.

Should Soler be gone, you can look to add Houston’s Jose Abreu with confidence.

His start to the season was atrocious, but as the calendar has flipped to June, he has taken off.

Many players have needed a full two months to get used to things like the pitch-clock and the banning of the shift, and Abreu was one of them.

He was also adjusting to a major life change, going from nine years in Chicago to Houston.

Things have settled down, he’s much more comfortable and it shows as he batted .302 with three home runs and 13 RBI over his previous 13 games heading into Friday.

His surrounding lineup has also started to improve, and once Yordan Alvarez returns, Abreu is going to see even more fastballs to park over the fence.

Speaking of Abreu’s old stomping grounds on the South Side of Chicago, with Yoan Moncada on the injured list yet again, your fantasy team can get its grub on with a tasty burger — White Sox third baseman Jake Burger to be precise.

A lack of consistent playing time to open the season and a .258 batting average may have left a bad taste in some people’s mouths, hence his low ownership, but 16 home runs and 36 RBIs should sweeten that right up.

The Chisox lineup might be a disappointment overall, but it has the ninth-most homers in June, and Burger’s five are a big part of it. As for underrated fantasy assets in fantasy, Burger is beyond delicious.

Focusing on your category needs is what you need to do now and moving forward.

Don’t get caught up in the names you acquire.

Find the players who are producing in the categories in which you are weakest and start padding those stats.

In fantasy baseball, names don’t win titles, numbers do.
