Marshawn Mitchell, a 14-year-old student of Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills, died Saturday after suffering a gunshot wound to the chest, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The shooting occured near school property following Hillcrest’s homecoming game against Oak Forest on Friday.

Mitchell’s family could not be reached Saturday.

According to a police report, shots were fired at about 9 p.m. near the school at 17401 Pulaski. Law enforcement was already in the area as officers were actively dispersing a group of students near the school when the shots were heard.

“It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the devastating loss of one of our Hillcrest High School students following a shooting incident that occurred on 175th Street,” Hillcrest High School said in a statement Saturday. “Our hearts go out to the families and friends of all those involved in this tragedy.”

The school canceled the homecoming dance that was scheduled for Saturday night.

“We are all saddened by the events that happened tonight after our Homecoming Football Game against Oak Forest,” the Hillcrest football team’s Facebook page posted around midnight. “Please pray for our staff and students who have been affected by this unfortunate, senseless act of violence!”

In a video posted Saturday morning on school sports video collection website MaxPreps, highlights from late in the game appear to show the game was unnaffected by the shooting. The school confirmed the shooting took place after the game concluded.

The shooting is still under investigation.
