Gleyber Torres’ miscue ends up costing Yankees: ‘Error is on me’

With their offense coming up empty lately, Aaron Boone said “little mistakes” can be more impactful to his team.

That was the case with Gleyber Torres’ miscue in the top of the eighth inning in the Yankees’ 3-2, 10-inning loss to Boston in The Bronx,

Leading by a run, Michael King gave up a leadoff single through the left side of the infield to Kiké Hernandez.

What should have been a routine throw back to second base instead turned into a bizarre error on Torres, who whiffed on the ball Billy McKinney casually one-hopped to him from left.

The ball skipped by Torres all the way to first, which allowed Hernandez to get to second.

Hernandez scored on Jarren Duran’s groundout to tie the game and the Red Sox won it in the 10th.

“We’ve got to be more careful with the ball,’’ Boone said. “Period.”

“It’s on me,’’ Torres said. “Billy threw the ball straight to the bag. I think I looked too fast to [see] the runner and just missed the ball.”

McKinney also said he was to blame, adding “I have to make a better throw and put it on the chest to Gleyber. I’ll take the fault there.”

But even with the ball not thrown directly at Torres, he was in position to at least stop it from getting by him, which would have kept Hernandez at first.

King then walked Reese McGuire and after Pablo Reyes bunted Hernandez and pinch-runner Connor Wong over, Duran’s grounder to second drove in Hernandez to make it 2-2.

Asked what he would have done differently on the play, Torres smiled and said, “Catch the ball.”

He explained that he “tried to catch it really fast and maybe throw to first base [behind Hernandez].”

For all his talent, Torres occasionally makes head-scratching mistakes like he did on Sunday.

“One of the things Gleyber does really well defensively is he plays the game with ease,’’ Boone said. “So you’ve got to strike that balance, you’ve got to be careful.”

And that wasn’t the case on this play.

“That can’t get on you like that,’’ Boone said. “Whether it’s off line a little bit or not, you’ve got to be in position to handle it. … We’ll work through it.”

Torres, who had made six errors this season after making seven all of last year, agreed.

“The error is on me,” Torres said. “I should’ve grabbed the ball. It was nothing difficult.”

Seeing Hernandez come around to score the tying run, which helped Boston extend the game it ultimately won to take the series, made it worse.

“It feels bad,’’ Torres said. “I think if I don’t make that error, Kiké is on first after that and maybe we get a double play.”
