Gerrit Cole earns 24th double-digit strikeout game as a Yankee

DENVER — Fresh off starting his first career All-Star Game, Gerrit Cole returned to dominating mere mortals on Sunday.

The Yankees wasted their ace’s latest stellar performance in a brutal 8-7, 11-inning loss to the Rockies at Coors Field, but Cole gave them every chance to win by striking out 11 across six innings of one-run ball.

On a day in which at one point he struck out six straight batters, Cole recorded his 24th double-digit strikeout game as a Yankee, passing Ron Guidry for the most in franchise history.

“It’s hard to comprehend, to be honest,” Cole said. “[Guidry] is one of the all-time Yankee greats. Any time you’re mentioned with him in a sentence or blessed enough to pass something that he set, it’s just a humbling experience. It’s a humbling moment. I have a lot of gratitude.”

Cole recorded his 24th double-digit strikeout game in his 95th game as a Yankee — all starts — after Guidry set the record across 368 games (323 starts).

“To get that record in as few games as he’s been here, just a testament to a great pitcher,” manager Aaron Boone said. “I thought he was really good today. I thought he was really good with his fastball location, command of that pitch. He didn’t make a lot of mistakes today.”

In the process, Cole lowered his ERA to 2.78 in his 20th start of the season.

The only blemish on his line Sunday was the solo home run that he allowed in the second inning to Michael Toglia, which came on a fastball just outside the zone.

Otherwise, Cole cruised while racking up 21 total swings and misses across 102 pitches.

During a stretch from the second inning to the fifth, he recorded nine straight outs via the strikeout.

“Just great location today and a lot of quality pitches with two strikes,” Cole said.

It marked yet another one of Guidry’s franchise records that Cole has broken.

Last season, Cole passed Guidry’s franchise record for single-season strikeouts with 257 to Guidry’s 248.

“I think it’s a different era, too, so you have to take that into consideration a little bit,” Cole said of the double-digit strikeout total. “But the bottom line is just to be surrounded by a lot of great Yankees is something you dream about, you aspire to as a kid.”
