The Florida Gators clearly wanted to make sure that Game 2 of the College World Series went nowhere near extra innings again. 

Florida put up 24 runs against LSU on Sunday to tie up the series at one and set a bit of history in the process.

Their 24 runs set a new College World Series record surpassing Notre Dame, which set the record with 23 runs against Northern Colorado, according to USA TODAY.

One other team that came close to the previous record was Arizona State, which tied it in 1984. 

It wasn’t just the number of runs that made Sunday a historic afternoon in Omaha for the Gators.

Florida recorded 23 hits and hit six home runs in the victory.

The six homers set the new record for most dingers in a College World Series finals game and the large volume of hits also set tied a finals record. 

It was in the third inning that the Gators’ offense took over the game and came back from a 3-1 deficit. 

Florida scored six runs in the third, including a grand slam by Ty Evans to break the 3-3 tie. 

Evans was one of two players on Florida to hit two home runs in the rout of LSU.

Jac Caglianone also hit two home runs in the game and Wyatt Langford went 5-for-5.

“Obviously we can’t take any of these runs into tomorrow,” Gators coach Kevin O’Sullivan said. “We’ll have to reset, reboot. But awfully proud of the way they responded from last night’s tough loss.”

A champion will be crowned on Monday when LSU and the Gators battle in Game 3 at Charles Schwab Field in Nebraska. 

The Gators would take home their first College World Series since 2017 if they won, and LSU would capture their program’s first title since 2009.
