Early morning homicide in North Chicago under investigation

A shooting early Friday morning in North Chicago left one woman dead.

An investigation into the homicide by the Lake County Major Crime Task Force and North Chicago police is ongoing.

At about 6:05 a.m., North Chicago police responded to a report of shots fired on Victoria Avenue. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a woman with major injuries in a vehicle, according to a task force release. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The task force believes the incident was a targeted shooting based on information gathered thus far.

A preliminary investigation shows the victim left a residence in the area and returned to a vehicle parked in a driveway on 11th Street.

After sitting down in the vehicle, someone approached the victim and shot her. The shooter fled from the scene following the shooting, according to the report.

The victim had yet to be identified Friday.
