Dhaka: The High Court expressed its displeasure over the non-submission of the NBR’s report on whether it has paid revenue in the transactions of E-Orange.

Sohail Rana, associated with E-Orange, accused of embezzling customer money, was arrested from the border area on September 3, 2021. He was detained by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) from the Changrabandha border in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district on charges of infiltration. Later on September 5, he was temporarily suspended by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

On behalf of 547 customers who were defrauded by buying products of 77 crore rupees from E-Orange. Afzal Hossain, Md. Arafat Ali, Md. Tariqul Alam, Sakibul Islam, Rana Khan and Md. Six customers named Habibullah Zahid filed a writ in the High Court in March last year.

The High Court issued a ruling on the preliminary hearing of the writ petition on April 7 last year and asked for a report from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU). Pursuant to that order, the respective defendants filed reports.

Although the report was given by the police, the NBR did not give the report. Later, the NBR Chairman was asked to inform whether the revenue was collected against the transactions during the operation of e-Orange. Also, the defendants were asked to submit a report within 30 days clarifying the complaints related to E-Orange. After this order, the state side took two weeks without submitting the report on the scheduled date. As a result, when he came to the hearing on January 29, time was requested again. The court still gave time.

In the hearing, Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik said that the investigation of the case is going on. Last Thursday, the documents of the Ministry of Home Affairs came at the very last hour. That is why the affidavit was not filed. Can be submitted next week.

Stating the position of Sohail Rana, the Deputy Attorney General said, ‘It has come to the press, Sohail Rana has escaped from the Indian jail on bail. Attempts are being made to bring information from India. The reports of the Home Ministry and the IGP are similar. ‘

M. Abdul Qayyum Liton, the lawyer of the writ petitioners, then said, “The court can give time if you want time to comply with the order.” The Chairman of NBR did not submit the report. And Interpol asked for some information to issue Interpol red notice against Sheikh Sohail Rana. It appears not to have been given.

At this stage, Deputy Attorney General said, ‘Interpol red alert has been issued against Sohail Rana, that number is also there. Affidavit will be filed. However, I have not received the report of the National Board of Revenue.
