Devils stun Rangers in OT in Game 3 to get back into series

The Devils have made this first-round series against the Rangers competitive again.

Dougie Hamilton scored 11:36 into overtime for the Devils to hand the Rangers a 2-1 loss Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, which prevented the home team from strengthening their already strong grip on this series.

This game played more into the Devils’ style than the Rangers.

With the score tied at one-all in the third period, the game turned into a track meet and the Devils were able to counter any offense the Rangers generated.

That was just what the Devils needed to do to alter the trajectory of this series.

After finding the back of the net at least twice in each of the last two games, the Rangers power play was not nearly as automatic in Game 3.

They went 0-for-5 in the loss, which included whiffing on a late third-period man-advantage.

The Rangers also fell back into the too-many-passes habit that plagued the team for parts of the regular season.

They were looking for the perfect play and forcing it at times in pursuit of the best-looking shot.

While they weren’t able to finish any of their chances in the first, the Rangers continued to smother the Devils and kept them off the scoreboard, too.

That all changed in a black-and-blue second period, in which there were seven penalties called and plenty of scrums that had the Garden fans on their feet.

Chris Kreider scored his fifth goal of the series to open the scoring at 3:39 of the middle frame, taking a forced turnover from Patrick Kane onto a two-on-one rush with Mika Zibanejad before sniping it over Schmid’s shoulder.

With the 1-0 score, the longest tenured Ranger became the first player in franchise history to record five or more goals through the first three games of a playoff year.

The game got a bit chaotic from there. At one point, there were scrums on both sides of the ice.

Timo Meier was shoved into Igor Shesterkin’s net and the Rangers netminder took exception.

He landed a couple punches on the Devils’ trade-deadline acquisition with his blocker, while Artemi Panarin exchanged pleasantries with the 6-foot-6 Kevin Bahl.

The Devils got a power play out of the madness and Jack Hughes made it count for his team with a power-play goal to even the score 1-1.
