DeSantis blasts ‘sham’ special counsel as GOP descend on Iowa

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis denounced the special counsel assigned to the Hunter Biden case — adding to a chorus of GOP voices crying foul over the US Department of Justice’s handling of the probe.

“This is going to be a total sham special counsel,” DeSantis told reporters Saturday as he glad-handed voters at the Iowa State Fair.

“The House, they’ve been working on supposedly holding Hunter Biden accountable,” he continued. “I think they’re trying to checkmate that investigation … they’re trying to kneecap the House’s ability to investigate.”

On Friday, Republicans slammed Attorney General Merrick Garland’s sudden appointment of Delaware US Attorney David Weiss as special counsel in the Hunter Biden investigation, accusing the move as a White House attempt to “stonewall” the ongoing House probe and “whitewash” the Biden family’s suspected influence-peddling.

Weiss is “the same guy who had been doing it with kid gloves anyways,” DeSantis said — referring to the sweetheart plea deal that US District Judge Maryellen Noreika rejected on July 26.

The plea agreement — which would have allowed Hunter Biden to serve just two years of probation for tax misdemeanors — was negotiated by Weiss’s office.

The Hawkeye State’s annual fair, an obligatory stop for White House hopefuls ahead of Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucus contests, drew a flock of Republican candidates Saturday.

Former UN ambassador Nikki Haley sported a sassy T-shirt reading “Underestimate me, that’ll be fun,” while investor Vivek Ramaswamy showed off his rap skills before an early-morning crowd.

Front-running former president Donald Trump, whose visits to Iowa have been few this year, blew in for a whirlwind 90-minute spin through the fair after buzzing the fairgrounds with his branded plane.

Throughout the day, DeSantis — who sat down with Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds for a “fair-side chat” Saturday morning, an event that Trump pointedly snubbed — was occasionally met with catcalls from raucous supporters of the former president.

At one point, a small plane towing a bright red banner reading “Be likable, Ron!” cruised overhead — making a dig at DeSantis’s sometimes awkward demeanor.

During a stop at the Iowa Pork Producers’ tent, as DeSantis flipped pork chops for the cameras, a group of nearby Trump boosters a few steps away began chanting “We love Trump,” the Des Moines Register reported — only to be countered by a chorus of “USA! USA!” from the governor’s fans.

Trump greeted a packed house inside the fair’s Steer N Stein restaurant for 10 minutes of remarks that he frequently interrupted as he introduced the contingent of congressional Republicans — including Florida Reps. Matt Gaetz, Byron Donalds, and Greg Steube — who had joined him for the trip.

“The other candidates came here, they had like six people,” Trump crowed as he reminded listeners of his large polling lead in the GOP primary race.

He reiterated his constant complaint that his 2020 election loss was “rigged,” and pledged “we’re going to win big” in 2024.

“We are going to take care of our country, we’re going to take care of Iowa, and you’ll be proud of our country again,” he promised.

But he made no mention of the Hunter Biden investigations, or of his own growing legal woes — with a potential fourth indictment in the Georgia election interference case expected as soon as Tuesday.
