A Chicago man is dead after the people with whom he was traveling engaged in a shootout in Hammond Saturday afternoon.

Hammond officers received a distress call at around 1:15 p.m. on July 29 for an accident involving multiple men and shots fired in 5900 block of Park Place, Hammond Police spokesman Lt. Steve Kellogg said in an email Monday. They arrived and found the one man dead, Kellogg said.

Police believe the parties involved knew each other and might’ve been traveling together, Kellogg said.

The Lake County Coroner’s office identified the decedent as 25-year-old Frank Pulling in a release.

“The Hammond Police Department extends its deepest sympathies to the victim’s family during this difficult time,” Kellogg said in the email. ” The Hammond Police Department is fully committed to maintaining the safety and security of our community. We will spare no effort to ensure that those responsible for this heinous crime are held accountable under the law.

“Further updates and details regarding the investigation will be released to the media and the public as soon as they are available.”

Kellogg urged anyone with any information on the shooting to contact Hammond Police Detective Sgt. Marc Ferry at 219-852-2991.
