Ball gets stuck in Green Monster, Masataka Yoshida gets befuddled

With the Green Monster in left field and odd dimensions elsewhere, Fenway Park has had its fair share of weird plays over its 111-year history.

But this one might be a first.

During the second inning of Wednesday’s contest between the Royals and Red Sox, Kansas City’s Kyle Isbel hit a liner toward the Monster.

Red Sox left fielder Masataka Yoshida ran back, leaped and crashed into the wall as the ball flew over his outstretched glove.

But when he recovered to get the ball back into the infield, the ball was nowhere to be found.

Yoshida spun in a circle — twice — before he realized the ball wasn’t in play but had been wedged into a light bulb used to keep track of the outs near the bottom of the wall.

The umpires ruled the play a ground-rule double, which kept Matt Duffy, the runner on first, from scoring.

The play seemed to fool everyone in the park, including WEEI radio broadcaster Joe Castiglione, who said he’d never seen that in his 41 years calling Red Sox games.

“It’s stuck inside the light!” Castiglione after a few seconds of silent confusion. “He couldn’t find it. Look at this.

“Busting the light and he thought it had bounced back and it was stuck inside the wall.”
