Angels’ trade deadline push for playoffs is off to a disastrous start

The Los Angeles Angels made the decision to go all-in at the trade deadline, but things have gone quite the opposite than they had hoped since then.

The Angels lost their sixth consecutive game on Sunday afternoon in a 3-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners in extra innings, dropping them to 56-57 on the year.

To make matters worse, they’ve dropped seven games back of the Toronto Blue Jays for the final wild-card spot in the American League.

If the Angels are hoping to get closer to that coveted playoff spot, they’ll have to jump the Boston Red Sox, Yankees and Mariners.

All of this comes after the Angels opted not to trade pending free agent Shohei Ohtani at the deadline, knowing full well that he could end up leaving the team this winter.

Instead, Los Angeles chose to go out and try to bring in some help in order to make one final playoff push as the Angels’ window to win a title could be closing if Ohtani leaves.

The Angels went out and added pitching in the form of Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo López, as well as bringing in some hitting help by acquiring C.J. Cron and Randal Grichuk.

Ironically, the Angels haven’t won a game since before the deadline back on July 31 when they beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1, which was their only win of the three-game set with Atlanta.

The four straight losses to Seattle will sting in particular since the Mariners are one of the teams in their way of a wild-card berth.

The Angels’ playoff chances have taken a significant hit under the current losing streak, with FanGraphs putting their chances at a mere 3.3 percent and Baseball Reference giving them a 3.4 percent chance to make the postseason.

“I feel like there’s a lot of games left which is huge,” Angels pitcher Tyler Anderson told the Los Angeles Times on Saturday. “Everyone’s talking right now like it’s the end of the season, but there’s a pretty significant amount of game left. We’re one good streak of being right in the middle of things right here.

“We just know the games are going to be tight from here on out. Just play clean baseball and give ourselves a chance.”

The Angels’ upcoming series with the San Francisco Giants will start to tell if this season can be salvaged or not, but as it stands Los Angeles has to feel some growing discomfort with their decision to go all in on this season.
