A magnitude 6.1 earthquake has hit Japan. The earthquake was felt in Hokkaido in the northern part of the country at 10:27 PM local time on Saturday (February 25).

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Japan Meteorological Agency reported this information.

The USGS said the earthquake struck at a depth of about 43 kilometers.

The earthquake shook the coastal towns of Kushiro and Nemuro. However, no tsunami warning has been issued.

Meanwhile, there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in the earthquake.

Earthquakes are a common occurrence in Japan. The country is located on the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’. It is an intense seismic activity, which spans Southeast Asia and the Pacific basin.
